In the face of COVID-19, the new Shiai regulations change the landscape of Kendo competition significantly. With the pandemic becoming more mild and spring on the way, you might find yourself in a large scale competition soon.
Prepare yourself with thorough knowledge about the new rules in this seminar and get the most out of your Shiai by adjusting your strategies!

Lesson content

This event’s theme is “Shiai and Shinpan”. Specifically, “explanation and practice of the provisional Shiai and referee rules in place until the COVID-19 pandemic is brought under control”. The following items will be covered:

  1. Positioning of the Shinpan
  2. Recognizing Yuko Datotsu
  3. The ideal Shiai

The last time, Yagisawa Sensei talked about

  1. Preparing for examinations
  2. Chakuso (how to wear your Kendo gear)

He also showed us some good and bad exam examples, and model exams were held.

How to participate

Please apply using this participation form.

Conditions of participation

  • As a Kendo player, you are expected to participate in the class with good manners and moderation.
  • You must have an internet connection and a Zoom account.
  • Participation via tablet or PC is recommended.
  • You are not required to wear Kendogi and Hakama. (Feel free to wear them if you want to)
  • If you want to review some motions while watching the video, please prepare a Shinai or Bokuto. (This is not required)

Makoto Yagisawa
Professor, Nippon Sport Science University

Born in 1961 in Akita Prefecture, Japan. Graduated from the Department of Martial Arts, Nippon Sport Science University in 1984. Completed the Graduate School of Physical Education, Nippon Sport Science University in 1990.
Kendo Kyoshi 8th Dan, head instructor of the Nippon Sport Science University Kendo Club, Vice President of the Nippon Sport Science University.
Standing Director of the All Japan School Kendo Federation. Permanent Secretary of the Kanto Student Kendo Federation Alumni Association.
Coach of the Finnish team at the 2003 World Kendo Championships in Glasgow.

Furusawa Nobuaki
Associate Professor, Nippon Sport Science University

Born in Kumamoto, Japan in 1981. Graduated from the Department of Martial Arts, Nippon Sport Science University in 2004. Retired from the Imperial Household Police Headquarters in 2015.

Completed the Master’s Course at the Nippon Sport Science University in 2017.
Kendo Kyoshi 7th Dan, Director and Men’s Manager of the Nippon Sport Science University Kendo Club.
National Police Kendo Kendo Championship Tournament (individual), 3rd place
Kanto Student Kendo Championship Tournament (individual), 1st place. All Japan Student Kendo Championship Tournament (team), 2nd place.
